Steal Like An Artist In Your Content Biz
There is a book called Steal like an artist. Now the author doesn’t mean to plagiarize, skim or rip off.
He means to study, credit, remix, mash up and transform. Creative work builds on what came before, and thus nothing is completely original.
So if you are looking to start a content business you don't need to be 100% original.
Here's how to "steal" one:
(While staying legal and ethical)
1. Find a brand
Is there a content business you follow and like already? Do you have expertise in their niche?
If so, that’s a perfect choice. If not, research to find one.
Expertise is preferred but not required.
2. Pick a differentiator
That content business will be doing things a certain way. The key is doing it a slightly different way.
For example, you can get specific, like a newsletter for small-cap stocks instead of the whole market.
3. Mostly copy the rest
Once you have that one big thing that makes you different, model the rest off of the brand you picked.
Use similar formats, angles, and marketing. Don’t copy, but use their strategy to build your own.
4. Create unique branding
Of course, you can’t have a name or branding that’s too similar to the original brand you picked.
This is an area where you can get creative. Choose a name, make a logo, use different colors, etc.
5. Capture their traffic
You can get your initial traffic the same way they get their existing traffic, whatever that is.
Market your brand in the same places they do, and consider directly competing with paid ads.
6. Find new traffic
Fighting for the same audience isn’t your only option, though. You can also find new people to join yours.
Note where that other brand isn’t, then see if you can market yours in those less saturated areas.
Are you an Agency Owner, Coach, or Consultant?
Then I might have a cool (and profitable) opportunity for you.
Owning your audience is becoming more valuable and important.
When I shifted to using newsletters to own my audiences the entire game of business changed for me.
It gave me my time back, so that I could enjoy the benefits of being an entrepreneur.
It reduced my stress levels, b/c I knew I would be able to drive revenue even if my ad account was turned off or my account got shadow banned.
It increased my rate per hour dramatically, so I stopped feeling under paid and over worked. Finally, I was being paid my worth.
It gave me some of that competitive edge back, b/c I became obsessive about being the best in the newsletter biz.
I think owning your audience can do the same for you.
It’s part of why I launched Newsletter Agency a done for your newsletter service.

Big weekend ahead for us!
We have a wedding that we are headed to. Susan’s cousin is getting married.
Plus, Caden and Lydia are both in the wedding. They are pretty excited about it. Pics to come next week!
It had me thinking about how the wedding invites are decreasing over the years. Almost all family and friends that are going to get married have done so at this point.
Other than a few random invites the next big weddings might be my kids.
Crazy how time flies, just like all those annoying people told me it would when I first had kids. lol
Anyways, I hope you have a great week!
Rooting for ya!

Oh yea, here is the pic of Caden and me court side at the Hornets vs Warriors game.
The ref came up to CK on a timeout and asked him to hold the ball until the game starts back up. He was stoked.
