iMessage agents are becoming a real category worth watching.

There's a gold rush happening right now and local services is the frontier.

Roofing contractors, Landscapers, Chiropractors, Dental offices, Med spas, etc

Every single one of these businesses is getting pitched AI right now. They get Emails, DMs, cold calls, LinkedIn connections from people who built something in March and are selling it in August.

Alex Lieberman said it better than I can:

"The best thing about AI is anyone can build. The worst thing about AI is anyone can build."

That's exactly what's happening.

And the business owners paying the price are the ones who can't tell the difference between a real system and a demo that looked good on a Zoom call.

Here's what the bad version looks like.

A roofing company pays $3,000 for an AI "system." They get a chatbot bolted to their website with no configuration, no training on their services, no integration with their CRM. It answers basic questions and routes everything else to a generic contact form.

Six months later, it's still giving out wrong service area information, because nobody's monitoring it.

The company that sold it moved on to the next client.

The owner doesn't know it's broken because nobody told them, and most customers just called a different roofer.

A chiropractic practice signs up for an "AI receptionist" that's really a voicemail transcription tool with a fancier name.

It captures the message, but it doesn't follow up and that means the front desk still has to handle everything manually.

Nothing changed except the line item on the credit card statement.

The real problems don't get solved and now the owner has written off AI entirely because the first thing they tried was garbage.

That's the part that costs the industry years.

Four questions to ask before you sign anything.

I've started telling every contractor and practice owner I talk to the same thing. Before you pay anyone to "add AI" to your business, ask these questions:

  1. Who manages this after we go live?

  2. What breaks when our software updates, and who fixes it?

  3. What does the system do when it fails silently?

That last one matters more than most people realize. A broken system that tells you it's broken is manageable, but a broken system that looks like it's running while leads fall through the floor is a different problem entirely.

If the vendor fumbles any of those four questions, you have your answer.

Now back to iMessage agents becoming a real category is a customer behavior story.

Your customers are already texting. They text to confirm appointments, ask about pricing, and check availability.

They do it because it's faster and lower friction than a phone call, and because most phone calls go to voicemail anyway.

What iMessage agents mean is that the AI touchpoint moves from a website widget nobody interacts with into the channel with a 98% open rate.

For a landscaping company, that's automated appointment confirmation, job reminders, and seasonal upsells running through a channel that gets read.

For a chiropractic practice, that's lapsed patient reactivation, missed appointment recovery, and review requests, all through the same channel a patient uses to text their family.

The businesses that build this right, with a governed system behind it that actually gets managed after the contract is signed, are going to have a real advantage.

The window is real, and it's not permanent.

I've been doing this 21 years, lost everything in 2008, and rebuilt from scratch. And one thing I've learned about windows of opportunity is that they don't announce themselves when they close.

The contractors and practice owners who figure this out in the next 12 months are going to set rates, build systems, and create a client experience that becomes the new standard.

The ones who wait because the first pitch they heard was bad are going to spend the next few years catching up to a gap that didn't have to exist.

Rooting for you!
